Quality time is one of the greatest gifts you can give to your aging loved one.  That’s why it is important to make the most out of your visits.

Give technology a pause. It only takes only a moment to show an aging parent how much they mean to you. Focused quality time with them which does not include using your cell phone to check email, scroll through Instagram or reply to texts. Try to be 100% present with your parent when visiting to get the most out of the time you are spending with them. Leave your phone in your bag or briefcase. This will allow you to truly listen, pay attention to your conversation and be aware of the nuances of body language. Stay in the moment so that all your attention is on your loved one. It will make them feel loved and that you care.

Listen to each other. Your loved one can sometimes be lonely and is no doubt is always eager to talk to family. This is your chance to listen. You may have heard stories of their youth countless times, but you still need to listen attentively and with an open heart. Make eye contact to show that you are interested in what they are saying and nod to show understanding. If they get upset, just comfort them and hold their hands.
